TRIPS: BELIZE
Alaska
| Belize | Guyana
For years, NS students have raised money to go on a trip
at the end of the year. The purpose of these trips has been to
share their culture and the story of Nunavut with indigenous peoples
elsewhere.
In May 2004, seventeen 1st year NS students travelled to Belize
to meet the Maya.
 |
NS students visited
ancient Mayan cities and temples. Here they examine an empty
tomb at Nim Li Punit.
|

|
Wherever they travelled in
Belize, the students put on performances to share their
culture. Here two students, Jenna Kamingoak (left) and Lucy
Angnokok perform a dance for an audience of several hundered
school kids. The show lasted over an hour and the kids loved
it!

Matthewsie Ashevak shows
the kids where Nunavut is.

ParnigaThibaudeau and Elaine
Lloyd of Iqaluit are swarmed by school kids wanting to get
their names written in Inuktitut.

the one-foot high kick to the school kids

Matthewsie Ashevak demonstrate the arm pull to an assembly
of kids at an elementary school in Indian Creek.
|
 |
Isabelle Takolik, along with
the rest of the students, spent a morning helping students
at a Mayan training school to plant corn. Corn is a traditional
and sacred crop to the Maya.

market in Punta Gorda, in the southern part of Belize.

 |
The Mayan were famous for
their incredible cities and temples, dating from over a
thousand years ago. Here, students climb up to the top of
the highest temple at Xanatunich, one of the largest of
the ancient sites within Belize.
|
 |
Here's what the ancient city
looked like from the top of the temple. Awesome!!
|
 |
Visiting Belize meant encountering
all sorts of exotic wildlife. Here Dan Taylor holds a huge
crab while others look on in both fear and delight.
