Students enrolled in the first year of the Nunavut
Sivuniksavut program take courses in Inuit history, Inuit
issues and organizations, and the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement.
These are complemented by courses in Inuktitut, English and
computers. This makes for a very full academic program. It's
a lot of work!
While they are in Ottawa, NS students act as Ambassadors
for Nunavut. They learn cultural performing skills from professional
instructors, and use them to educate southerners about Inuit
culture and the north. They give presentations to people of
all ages in schools and other public events. Their performances
include throatsinging, drumming, Inuit games and fashion shows.
And of course a major focus of the fall is on learning the
skills needed to live successfully in the south while studying
– that's a full-time program in itself!
Students who successfully complete all their courses in
the Fall and Winter semesters receive both a Nunavut Sivuniksavut
Certificate and an Algonquin College Certificate at the end
of the program.
