Inuktitut III | Understanding Politics | Workshop In Essay Writing | Optional Courses

DIRECTED RESEARCH

The ability to design, carry out, report on, and evaluate independent research is critical to success in most post-secondary programs as well as many workplaces. This course, building on skills introduced in Year I, will have two main goals:

1. to allow students to develop and demonstrate the ability to design and carry out a research project utilizing multiple information sources and a variety of information collection techniques;

2. to allow students to pursue in-depth examination of an historical or current issues topic of their choice.

Throughout the course students will share their findings weekly with peers and will also present their final results to students in Year I. The final research paper will be presented to a panel made up of representatives from local Inuit organizations and academic institutions.

Examples of possible research topics include: government relocation of Inuit, the transition to communities, beginnings of community government, TB epidemics and treatment, international indigenous rights, environmental issues (POPS, global warming), collapse of the sealing economy, the animal rights movement, traditional knowledge, militarization of the north, etc.
