INUKTITUT I
This course provides an introduction to the basic phonetic,
syntactic and lexical features of Inuktitut through communicative
language classroom activities and thematic units. The four
skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing, both in
standardized syllabics and in Roman orthography, are integrated
within classroom activities. Students will also learn about
the history of Inuktitut, and the development of a unified
script by the Inuit Language Commission in the 1970s.
Inuit culture will also be examined as it is reflected in
the structure and vocabulary of Inuktitut, Inuit dialects
will also be studied from Siberia to Greenland.
It is recognized that students will come to the course with
varying levels of proficiency in the above skill areas and
with varying dialectical backgrounds. Individual assessments
will take place at the beginning of the course and learners
will be grouped together for appropriate levels of instruction.
