Winter Activities

The Nunavut Sivuniksavut Board, staff, current and past students would like to extend their heartfelt condolences to the Kusugak family during this difficult time. We are saddened by the loss of our good friend Jose, a long-time supporter of the Nunavut Sivuniksavut program.

Over the years Jose touched the lives of many NS students, generously sharing his wealth of experience, his knowledge and his ideas; teaching with that unique and rare ability that never failed to engage and inspire; and always with the intent of opening students' minds to new possibilities. And of course, no matter how serious or important the issue, he would bring laughter into the room. Those fortunate enough to participate in Jose's sessions easily recognized they were in the presence of a master educator.

When NS became officially incorporated as an independent organization Jose stepped forward to be one of the founding board members; agreeing to be one that would take on responsibility for oversight of the organization. His support and guidance, to both staff and board, proved invaluable.
Jose's spirit will always live on at NS, but we will miss him dearly.

Creating name tags in Inuktitut syllabics is always popular with the public, especially the younger ones. Here Myna Kiguktak of Grise Fiord and Jo-anne Idlout of Igloolik do the honours.

Former NS'er Jesse Mike speaks to the students about her work at NTI , and the growing interest of young people in voting and the political process

Students get great joy out of presenting their culture to southern Canadians. The National Capital Winterlude Festival is always an opportunity for exposure to the hundreds (sometimes thousands) of visitors who pass through the festival grounds.

Studying the work of the various Inuit organizations is a major focus of NS studies. Here former NS'ers Melissa Irwin and Kevin Kablutsiak (both now at ITK) make a presentation to students on the current work of ITK ,its role in promoting Inuit interests with the Federal Government and the many different projects they carry out in the health and environmental areas.

Feb.14th, time for that NS tradition of the guys presenting roses to their female classmates and instructors!

The new NS facility offers a welcome space for other students in the city. Here former NS'ers Kiah Hachey and Alannah Johnston work on their Carleton University assignments. Do I dare say they're good role models for current NS students?

A Premier moment. How better to learn about the Nunavut Government than to have a presentation from the Premier herself!
