Land Claims II | Inuit-Government Relations | Contemporary Issues II
Inuit History II | English II | Inuktitut II

INUIT-GOVERNMENT RELATIONS

How did the Nunavut land claims agreement come about? What did Inuit leaders have to do to achieve it? What obstacles did they have to overcome? These and other questions are addressed in this course on Inuit-Government Relations.

Students learn about the kind of settlement the federal government originally wanted to make with Inuit, and how Inuit leaders worked to achieve something quite different. Along the way, students learn about the factors that influenced government, including northern development, court decisions, lobbying activities and public opinion. The course includes presentations by Inuit leaders who were a part of that story.

Contemporary Issues II>>>

The class of 2004-2005 spent a day on Parliament Hill with Peter Ittinuar, who was Nunavut's Member of Parliament from 1979 till 1984. The students met with the Speaker of the House of Commons, observed Question Period, and learned first-hand what it felt like to be the first Inuk to speak in the House of Commons.
