What to bring
Where will I stay when I get to Ottawa?
NS has rented a number of apartments near the school that are
available to students when they first arrive in Ottawa. After
getting to know each other at Orientation, students then decide
who wants to share which apartments (in groups of 3 or 4) for
the rest of the year.
What is a "lease"?
A lease is a legal document, like a contract, that you may be
asked to sign when you want to rent an apartment. When you sign
it, you are promising to do a number of things, such as pay your
rent on time, and follow certain rules regarding noise, putting
out garbage, respecting the needs of neighbours etc.
Students using NS apartments are asked to sign a lease promising
to pay rent for the eight months they are in the NS program. Students
renting apartments in the private market may be asked to sign
a 12-month lease even if they're only planning on being in Ottawa
for eight months.
What happens if I don't pay my rent?
You don't want to find out! (try and imagine what it's like living
in the city when you don't have anyplace to live). The point:
paying the full rent on the day it's due (usually the first of
the month) is very important.
