PAST YEARS:
2002-2003

Here's a sample of the many things students did during the 2002-2003
year at NS.

|
The year began at a retreat
centre called Harris Farm, outside of Ottawa. It gave everyone
a chance to get to know each otherbetter, and to prepare
for life in the city.
|

|
Orientation is where a group starts to
find its direction!
|

|
Each year, NS students participate in
the local AIDS Walk through the downtown streets of Ottawa.
This year, they handed out free condoms to passers-by.
|

|
Each year, NS students learn about the
various Inuit organizations - how they got started, what
they do etc. In Ottawa, they get to visit some of those
organizations directly. This photo is from their visit to
the offices of the Inuit Tapiriit Kanatami (ITK) where they
were given a presentation by president Jose Kusugak.
|

|
Guests are an important part of the learning
experience at NS, and during the year, many leaders from
up north come through the classroom to share what they know
with the students. Here, Mathewsie Ashevak presents a gift
to Nunavut MP Nancy Karetak-Lindell, who meets with students
each year.
|

|
One of the benefits of studying in Ottawa is that students
get to use the many educational resources in the National
Capital Region. Here, Karen Panigoniak of Arviat looks at
arial photos of her home community at the National Aeronautical
Photo Library.
|

|
NS students study the land claims agreement
and many of the organizations that were created by it. Here
students conduct a long-distance teleconference call with
the Chair of the Nunavut Water Board to learn about the
history of the NWB.
|

|
Sharing their culture with people in the
south has become an important part of the NS experience.
Here, Abbigail Noah of Baker Lake talks to adult students
at a school for new immigrants to Canada.
|

|
Marie Taukie (back to camera) and Innujaq
Dean throat sing for the Governor General and her husband.
NS students are regularly invited to share their culture
with the public during the annual Winterlude celebrations
in Ottawa.
|

|
Every so often, NS students take a day
off to enjoy the south. Each year, this includes a day-trip
to Montreal to enjoy the sites of this beautiful city. Here,
(L-R) Tommy Akulukjuk, instructor Murray Angus, Pauloosie
Akeeagok, and Miali Coley enjoy a horse and buggy ride through
old Montreal.
